Assisting Dance Instructors in Nurturing Their Mental Well-being

Over the years, the dance community has witnessed numerous cultural shifts, recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't suffice and offering guidance on nutritious eating habits to support dancers. Despite these advancements, one crucial aspect has often been overlooked and remains shrouded in the shadows of dance studios and rehearsal spaces: the mental health of dancers.

As a dance teacher, you've likely encountered various reasons why your students or colleagues may face mental health challenges. These could stem from traumatic childhood experiences, adult abuse, severe stress, recurring injuries, or feelings of isolation both within and outside the dance realm.

These struggles can manifest in various forms, including depression, self-harm, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety. Unfortunately, they often go unnoticed or unaddressed within training institutions and the professional dance community.

It's essential to recognise that you are a human being first and a dance teacher second. To help you prioritise and manage your mental health resilience, here are seven strategies:

Speak to a trusted colleague, friend, family member, or mental health professional to acknowledge and address your challenges.

Maintain healthy connections with your dance community and loved ones through phone calls, video chats, and safe in-person meetings.

Engage in regular exercise, including dancing, to boost your mood and support your overall health.

Incorporate self-care practices tailored to dancers, such as sports massage, reflective journaling, alternative physical activities, and relaxation techniques.

Take online courses to enhance your teaching skills and knowledge of mental health maintenance.

Practice generosity and kindness towards others to promote feelings of reward and purpose.

Focus on the present moment to alleviate anxiety about the future and regrets about the past.

By integrating these strategies into your daily routine, you can better manage the fluctuations in your mental health and build the resilience needed to support your dance students effectively.
