Colin Lang - Theatre Director and Co-Chief Examiner

Colin Lang (Fellow + Senior Examiner ABD) is our Theatre Dance President.

Colin has been associated with the entertainment profession for the last 23 years since leaving school - during which time his career has encompassed all aspects of the industry from Opera to Film & Television, Cabaret to Musical Theatre, Summer Seasons, Tradeshows and Pantomimes.

He started way back as a chorus dancer/ensemble member, then moved through the ranks becoming Dance Captain/Male Lead on many No.1 theatre shows before progressing to Assistant Choreographer, Associate Choreographer, etc, and finally the top job in his own right. During that time, he had the privilege to work with numerous industry icons of the era including Alan Harding, Gillian Gregory, Carole Todd, Peter Van der Sloot, Ray Cornell and Anthony Johns, amongst others.

The teams under his management have been diverse in both quantity (from 6 dancers through to a company of 50+) and genre. Personal highlights include choreographing the 2004 West End production of "Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs" starring Lily Savage, and re-staging "Spirit of the Dance - The Irish Dance Spectacular" for their guest appearance on "Michael Jackson & Friends" (B.B.C.1 and ZDR Television).

However, he has choreographed and re-staged numerous productions during his career including 11 pantomimes, 2 Royal Galas (in the presence of H.R.H. The Prince Edward and H.R.H. The Princess Margaret), 2 Shirley Bassey Dinner/Cabaret Concerts, and shows for Pleasure Island Theme Park and Thomson Sun.

Whilst choreographing for David King/Spirit of the Dance, Colin was responsible for 5 productions of the show including the first 2 major U.S.A./Canadian Tours, Casino formats at The Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, and The Eldorado, Reno, as well as the 1st European Tour of Holland, Austria, Belgium and Germany. He was also responsible for re-staging 'The Tempest' and 'The New Millennium' for "Spirit's" debut with a 60-piece orchestra that was broadcast live on Dutch television (1999). In 2001, he choreographed 'Thunderdance' for the production 'One World', and this along with pieces he worked on - including 'Two Tribes' - can still be seen in productions around the world today.

During the last few years his work has become more varied and he is regularly engaged as Movement Director/Choreographer for Shakespeare In Education Ltd; contributing to the national tours of Macbeth, Richard III, The Tempest and Romeo & Juliet.

Alongside this, he has choreographed The Best of The West End (Provincial Tour) and Musical Mania! (Birmingham).

Choreography is Colin's "true" passion, but he has had input into the education of 100's of students over the last eight years. In great demand as a lecturer/choreographer at training institutions across the country including Birmingham School of Acting (BSA/BCU), Birmingham Theatre School (BTS/Matthew Boulton and City Colleges) and most recently, The Midlands Academy of Dance & Drama. His work has encompassed all genre and disciplines from Tango to Tap, Physical Theatre to Polka and Waltz to Hip-Hop on a range of plays/musicals such as War & Peace, Ring Around The Moon, Coram Boy, A Winter’s Tale, Scrooge, Company, Blitz!, Oh! What A Lovely War and Honk!

Occasionally, he lectures and adjudicates for a number of dance associations or festivals and recently these have included The East Warwickshire Dance Festival, The United Kingdom Alliance, The National Association of Teachers of Dance, The Association of American Dancing, The All England and British Championships (Theatre Dance Council International) and the IDTA Miss Dance/Master Dance of Great Britain 2005.

He was honoured to be elected Vice-President of the ABD – “Associated Board of Dance” in 2001 and is now currently the Theatre Dance President of the ABD for 2011/12 as well as the position of Senior Examiner and also sitting as a delegate on the “Board of Dance Qualifications and Training” (BDQT)

However, his greatest accolade-to-date was receiving The Carl Alan Award for Professional Services to Dance 2003.

Meet the team.
